The Very Pricey Jane….

The Novels and The Letters of Jane Austen, Published in 1923, based on the collation of the early editions by R.W. Chapman. The large paper edition limited to 1000 copies, sold in October on Abebooks for $4,862.

Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in full dark green morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. With colour and black and white illustrations. A fine set.

  1. For those with less deep pockets (like myself…), you’ll find most of Chapman’s 1923 edition of the novels online at Internet Archive (the one volume missing: Mansfield Park). Our blog links the individual novels here.


  2. That is INDEED the dilemma! I’m very old fashioned: love the feel of book, dust jacket & paper. The best description ever: the opening of Byatt’s POSSESSION. Now there is a book well and lovingly described…
