June 13, 2012: the results are in on today’s Christie’s auction I posted about last month – the sale of a first edition of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey and Persuasion:
Lot 169. AUSTEN, Jane (1775-1817). Northanger Abbey and Persuasion. With a Biographical Notice of the Author [by Henry Austen]. London: C. Rowarth [vols I-II], and T. Davison [vols III- IV] for John Murray, 1818 [but ca. 20 December 1817].
Hammer price: £5,625 ($8,696)
Estimate £5,000 – £8,000 ($7,730 – $12,368)

There were three Humphry Repton titles – this one took the highest prize:
Lot 118. REPTON, Humphry (1752-1818). Sketches and Hints on Landscape Gardening. London: W. Bulmer and Co., for J. & J. Boydell, [1795].
Hammer price: £17,500 ($27,055)
Estimate £8,000 – £12,000 ($12,368 – $18552)

What I want to know about is The Ring! Had I a purse the size of the Chawton Great House, it would be Mine. I wonder who’ll get it, and if it will be on display for us to look at. And it might help in the all-important issue of Portrait Authentication, to check what size it is… (not sure how exactly, but the forensics seem to be trying every possible avenue.)

Yes, Diana, this news is very interesting! – can’t wait for more information – perhaps it is just the imaginary wedding ring on her finger in the Victorian version of JA’s image!

Yes, I knew the ring was real, was just joking about the “imaginary” wedding ring [as there seems to be a lot of imaginary things relating to Jane lately!] ! I just hadn’t seen the picture yet [the catalogue was not available when I first went in to look at it…] – so very glad you sent me this link! – a lovely ring, a little out of the range of my pocket-book!
