Food for Thought: Austen Astrology

Does the following sound familiar? Remind you of anyone??

aqu1Aquarians “basically possess strong and attractive personalities. They fall into two principle types: one shy, sensitive, gentle and patient; the other exuberant, lively and exhibitionist, sometimes hiding their considerable depths of their character under a cloak of frivolity. …. In spite of the often intensely magnetic forthcoming and open personality of the more extrovert kind of Aquarian, and of their desire to help humanity, neither type makes friends easily. They sometimes appear to condescend to others and take too little trouble to cultivate the acquaintance of people who do not particularly appeal to them. They do not give themselves easily – perhaps their judgment of human nature is too good for that – and are sometimes accounted cold. But once they decide that someone is worthy of their friendship or love, they can exert an almost hypnotic and irresistible mental attraction on them and will themselves become tenacious friends or lovers, ready to sacrifice everything for their partners and be faithful to them for life. However, they are sometimes disappointed emotionally because their own high personal ideas cause them to demand more of others than is reasonable. And if they are deceived their anger is terrible. If disillusioned, they do not forgive.”

pp2It does a lot to explain the personality of Mr. Darcy… Wouldn’t you agree?

Was Jane at all interested in astrology?? Born 16 December, she would have been Sagittarius — The Archer. Interesting that the sign is described as the “bow & arrow,” but also as a sign with a burden or struggle. Hmm…

What sign accounts for Lizzy Bennet’s characteristics??

If you have any particulars among the other novels, What about star signs for any of the characters in Austen’s novels??

  1. Hi Kelly..excellent query! That IS Darcy! [where did you get that description of Aquarians?] Better than classing him as autistic as has been done recently!

I did find this site online about Austen’s birth sign: http://www.librarising.com/astrology/celebs/janeausten.html which sounds like it was written for her specifically!

And Ellen Moody has written a fine analysis of Austen’s use of the almanacs of her day, and how this study of time (and the stars) in the novels does much to enlarge our understanding of the characters and the plot of each. Ellen’s essays and calendars for each of the novels are invaluable tools: see this link http://www.jimandellen.org/austen/emcalendars.html with succeeding links to the works.

    Happy reading!

  2. Actually… it is my own star sign. Someone gave me a print out yesterday. I thought it all quite spot on. Then the more I read — well, a little light went off. Who knew Darcy & I had so much in common. Maybe Elizabeth is a Gemini; I think those two star signs get on rather well, in a complimentary fashion. But I await our readers’ thoughts on the subject!!

  4. Very interesting thoughts. The only star sign I know much about is Libra as I am one – supposed to be fair-minded, can detach from emotion and consider options calmly. This could be Jane Bennet couldn’t it? Or Elinor from S&S? Librans are also neat and appreciative of beauty. We hate noise and confusion. Which star sign is Marianne I wonder -what about Pisces, romantic, unpractical, unrealistic and dreamy, just looked up the characteristics! I also think Elizabeth could be Gemini – witty, curious, entertaining plus manipulative and cynical! Fascinating exercise!

  5. It is very interesting to me that you suspect Elizabeth Bennet of being a Gemini; my father is a Gemini and I an Aquarian — they seem VERY compatible star-signs (if we are anything to go by), each bringing to the relationship what the other lacks. Very like the Darcys! You indeed might be on to something.

Your comments definitely fit Jane Bennet; and the picture you pain of Marianne Dashwood indeed gives MUCH food for thought. I work with a Pieces… will have to observe her more closely!

Regarding Jane, it was wonderful to see in the old 1979 PP that while Elizabeth thinks one way about the meeting in Meryton between Mr Wickham and Mr Darcy — Jane had noticed a totally-different encounter. She was certain it was Mr Wickham and no Mr Darcy who caused the uncomfort. This makes her question her sister… but also her own eyes and conclusions. It was just a smashing moment! This Jane, especially, is shown as the epitome of your idea of “calm and fair-minded’.

  6. I would suspect that Mr. Darcy was a Capricorn due to his loyalty to his work as well as his trouble with expressing emotions even though he’s deeply romantic.

  7. Hi, I really like your thought but in my opinion Mr Darcy is Capricorn. He is a man of few words, moral obligations are very important to him, but at the same time he has this inner insecurity about emotions which are typical about Capricorn Sun, Moon, Venus and Ascendant.

  10. You are all wrong. Elizabeth Bennet is an Aries. She is straightforward and headstrong. Many people like to say Lydia is an Aries but don’t forget the fact that this sign is an equinox sign ( i.e. fair as a Libra). Lydia would be a Saggittarius or a Leo. While Jane is a Taurus and Mr. Bingley a Virgo maybe?

  11. jane austen was a sag. They are headstrong and sharp with come-backs. They can be almost inhumane at times but intensely loving and caring too. I think even though she named lizzy’s sister jane, Lizzy is the character Jane Austen embraced for herself. I think in real life she would have wanted a challenge (again typical desire for sag’s) like Mr. Darcy in a relationship. Scorpios can be alot like sag’s so I think Mr. Darcy is scorpio because also they give in to their feelings ( a little reckless) which is why he said he loved elizabeth in spite of his better judgement. Also a sag can out wit a scorpio if she was intelligent and angry enough. Sag’s and scorpios in a fight-watch out
